Louisville, Ky
., July 2, 1832, to William T. Barry, as Postmaster General, recommending a Louisville Physician for an appointment to the Medical Staff of the Army. Apparently the writer felt that writing a fellow Kentuckian in the President's Cabinet, would have some influence.
The letter reads:
"Dear Sir,
It is perceived that it is proposed to increase the Medical Staff of the Army to meet existing emergencies. Doct. Charles B. New of this City is desirous of an appointment under this new arrangement and I take much pleasure in soliciting your kind offices in favor of his application. He is a native of this City and a Grand-son of the late Major John Harrison, one [of] the oldest and most reputable and chivalric of the early adventurers to Kentucky, and of Col. Anthony New, whose public and private character are familiarly know to you.
Doct. New, in point of professional attainments and personal worth, is among the most promising young gentlemen of this State and should he receive a public appointment, will no doubt perform the duties of the station honorably to himself and usefully to the government.
I beg leave to refer you to the testimonials from the most eminent of our professional gentlemen forwarded to by Doct. New to the Secretary of War....
