Postal History / LetterStampless folded letter written August 4, 1839 by A.F. Lawyer, a Navy surgeon's mate - headlined "Balize" which I presume to be Belize off the coast of northeast central America - and postmarked in New Orleans, Louisiana. See scan of typewritten transcript - an amazing letter, writes of their voyage to date, jokes that he may marry a French creol girl, writes of a terrible brass canon explosion and resulting injury to a soldier, much detail of their travels - long letter. Letter sent to his father Thomas Lawyer, the postmaster of Lawyersville in Schoharie County, New York.
