    Description

    1842 stampless cover/letter from Gill, MA (in Franklin County) to Stockbridge, MA (in Berkshire County).  The letter has been folded upon itself to form a cover for mailing purposes.
    Unfortunately, about three quarters of first sheet of the letter is missing, although the place and date are thankfully still present at top.
    The letter is marked with Gill and dated June 23, 1842.
    At the top left of the cover, it shows a handwritten notation
    reading "Gill, Ms.  June 24" with a handwritten "Free" and the name of the postmaster at top right, which is presumably when and from where it was sent, as well as the delivery fee.
    As to content, it is a personal letter.  In the portion of the letter still present, we see that it is a letter from a father to his sons.  Then it shift to a letter written by a brother to his other brothers, and then it flips back again to the father writing to his sons.  It is a very serious letter which appears to discuss some important matters, but the handwriting is a bit of a challenge (as well as the missing portion).  However, I think with some effort, much of it would be legible and decipherable.
    The cover is in overall clean condition, except for the major problem of the missing portion discussed above and a small tear where the wax seal was opened.  It is a Very Fine piece ready to enhance any collection of early American postal history, particularly of Massachusetts, Franklin County, or Berkshire County.
