    1992 Ad-Film Documentary
"An amusingly realistic look at America's idealized past." -- CD-ROM World
In the pre- and postwar years,
    (approximately 1931 through 1960)
, American industry, education and advertising made over 600,000 short films--none of them intended to be preserved.  Fortunately, media archaeologist Rick Prelinger saw the films for what they are: revealing, poignant, often hilarious testaments to an America that believed hard work, streamlined appliances, and proper chaperones would keep the Red Peril at bay.
In these forerunners to yesterday and today's infomercials, Roll-Oh the Robot and the singing Esso men promote products and, along with them, a world of progress without end. Mostly sponsored by big corporations, the films in
    "To New Horizons"
depict the golden age of American industry. And once technology has set us free,
"You Can't Get There From Here"
offers a paean to unbridled consumerism. Check out
"What to Do on a Date" (weenie roast or taffy pull?)
    ,
"Two-Ford Freedom" (a second car will set her free)
    , and
    "The Relaxed Wife" (tranquilizers).
Prelinger's perceptive commentaries explore the darker side of postwar American suburbia, a place that shamelessly relegated women to the domestic realm and checked the behavior of unruly teens.  Conceived as advertisements for a lifestyle, these wildly entertaining films are a window into our collective national psyche.
