OK, someone reading this knows exactly what it is, what it's called and what it does, ....but not me.OLD TECH: I can see that it is very old, very 'old-school' complicated and has a built in big melting pot full of Lineotype lead. It is a little dusty from sitting around for the last 100 years.
It appears there are gas burners which melt the lead, but what on earth does all the rest of this thing do? Maybe it actually makes the individual little lead letters/type?
If you can fire it up I wouldn't be surprised at all if it works as it is supposed to. Doesnt look like anything is missing or broken other than missing a wide, flat leather drive belt off of the electric motor.
WEIGHT: I'm just guessing it weighs 2000+ lbs but I can get an accurate weight before shipping. Of that, there must be a few hundred pounds just in lead!
SIZE: Looks to be about 6' long x 30" wide x 40" tall.
There is also 100 lbs+/- of loose lead Linotype that goes with it.
SHIPPING: Free Shipping anywhere in the lower 48 states - FREE to any Commercial or business address with a forklift and/or dock. Delivery to a non-business address by lift gate truck add 0.
CONTACT: My number is in the last pic.
UPDATE: A fellow eBayer writes: "
It’s actually an Elrod strip caster. Similar in concept to Linotype, but does not produce fonts, but instead strip material used in print operations.".
