American P.O.W. CIVIL WAR Prisoner of War 1864 Cover from JOHNSON'S ISLAND PRISON to South Carolina via Flag of Truce. A black double cds Sandusky / O. / NOV 27 / '64. A black hand stamp DUE 10 ~ the Confederate rate. A partial black Richmond, Virginia c.d.s.Manuscript endorsement upper left "From Thomas F. Jones, Capt. Co. A, 16th Battalion, Ga [Georgia] Cavy". Another manuscript endorsement "For Flag of Truce".
The cover is addressed to Mrs. Louisa Y. Jones, Care Gen. Thomas F. Jones, Laurens Court House, South Carolina. . Louisa was the wife of Captain Jones. General Jones was his father and the General of the State Militia. Captain Thomas Jones (1832-1899) was a Company Commander under the Confederate Raider, General John Hunt Morgan. Was captured and confined to Johnson's Island Prison. He survived the war and became a Doctor in South Carolina and Georgia ~ dying there in 1899.
JOHNSON'S ISLAND is located on Lake Erie offshore from the City of Sandusky, Ohio.
Examined marking is one of Type I of the Oval Handstamps of PRISONER'S LETTER ~ EXAMINED ~ JOHNSON'S ISLAND with replaceable initials G.S.B which identifies the Examiner as George S. Brown. Mr. Brown was in service November 5, 1864 thru June 14, 1865, near the closing of the prison. This is the second Truce cover from Jones to his wife that we have had on eBay.
CONDITION: Very good. Cut opened at the top. Some wrinkling at the top and side. Here and there mild soiling. Some mounting marks on the reverse. Excellent and clear hand writing. Very collectible Flag of Truce cover.
