    Description

    American CIVIL WAR Prisoner of War Cover from JOHNSON'S ISLAND PRISON with cds Sandusky, O. JUN 28.  A target and pen cancel ties 2 Scott  65's. Addressed to Mrs. A. H. Wallace, Elizabethtown, Illinois with a receiving cds JULY 3 GOLCONDA, ILL. for the Elizabethtown destination but
    forwarded to Louisville, Kentucky. A Golconda postmark is very rare from this period.
    JOHNSON'S ISLAND is located on Lake Erie offshore from the City of Sandusky, Ohio.
    Manuscript examined marking is "Ex R"  which probably identifies the Examiner as Chauncey H. Rittman who used "Ex R"  in service June 25, 1864 thru June 28, 1864.
    CONDITION: Very good. Opened at the flap. Minimal wear and soiling. Edges intact. Two stamps are F/VF. Second Scott 65 was probably attached in transit.
