CIVIL WAR Prisoner of War Cover from JOHNSON'S ISLAND with blue d.c.d.c. with 4 ring target cancellation MAY 29, 1865. The target ties Scott 65. The cover is sent to Meigs Esq. Clerk of the U.S. Supreme Court, Washington D. C. Note on front in manuscript ink states that the cover and it's contents to Comdg Genl of Prisons, June 3, '65 with a pencil note in manuscript "Winchester".JOHNSON'S ISLAND is located on Lake Erie offshore from the City of Sandusky, Ohio.
Examined markings are 1 of Type I of the Oval Handstamps of PRISONER'S LETTER ~ JOHNSON'S ISLAND O. ~ EXAMINED ~ with replaceable initials P. E. M. is unidentified. The Examiner P. E. M. was in service May 5, 1865 thru May 29,1865.
First POW cover we have seen sent to U.S. Supreme Court.
CONDITION: Excellent. Neatly cut opened at the bottom. Bottom flap is missing. Slight wrinkle at top. Very clean and attractive cover.
