Illustrated cover posted from Manila, canceled October 16, 1936, with proper 1p50c franking.  Judging by the cancel, must had been carried carried on the
return "press flight"
from Manila organized by PanAm before opening regular passenger service
Scarce
non-philatelic
memento of an important milestone in the history of Trans-Pacific civil aviation.  Airmail service to Philippines was inaugrated in 1935, but  regular passenger service had  not started till the Oct. 23, 1936 flight  from San Francisco.  Prior to the start of the  passenger service, Pan Am had organized a publicity flight  for the press (leaving San Francisco Oct. 7, returning Oct. 24).  Mail was carried on the press flight, but except for a few special covers prepared by Pan Am's PR chief W. van Dusen,  such covers can be only identified by the cancel dates.
